“Almost every person has a story.”

We should all have the right to own our truths, but that won’t be possible without systemic change in the workplace. Lift Our Voices is taking on that challenge.

Gretchen and Julie Roginsky founded the nonprofit Lift Our Voices to eradicate clauses in workplace contracts that silence survivors of harassment, assault and all other forms of discrimination at work like race or gender discrimination. In changing workplace culture; LOV aims to create a safe, inclusive and more diverse environment for all workers.

WHAT ARE THESE SILENCING MECHANISMS?

FORCED ARBITRATION is a clause buried in the fine print found in the majority of employment contracts. If something bad happens at work, it prevents you from going public. You lose your voice and your right to tell your own truth. Worst of all, those who simply report bad behavior are almost always forced out of their jobs and careers, while the abuser walks away without severe consequences. 60 million people in the United States are currently bound by forced arbitration clauses at work. By 2024, 84% of all American workers will be silenced in this way.

NON-DISCLOSURE AGREEMENTS (NDAs) are also becoming far too prevalent. Currently, one-third of Americans are bound by NDAs. While NDAs were rightfully created to protect trade secrets at work, many companies have taken advantage of this mechanism to prevent employees from speaking their truths. This includes but is not limited to unequal pay, discrimination, harassment and assault. We want to protect propriety information, but we also want to protect workers. There's a way to do both.
